Looooool I used to be so obsessed with these books. I have them all, the main series and all of those mini ones, there's what like twelve books overall? I was like eleven when I first got into them and every year would be right into the new one. They had me so good. God I loved them.
Anyway, this was a hilarious and eye-opening reread. This suuuuucked! Never meet your heroes.
First off, John, what an annoying little horny rat of a protagonist. God! He is so annoying. So many of the decisions that he makes are just because horny, and it always leads to disaster. Like it ultimately leads to the death of the only good character in the book??? (his dad but not dad). Bro just, calm down.
The romance between John and Sarah made me gag so much it is so gross and just poorly written. The two guys who wrote this freak me out ew why are they writing like this about 15 year old kids? The way they describe Sarah from the perspective of John made me want to jump off a cliff. You couldn't get more stereotypical and basic and boring, why doesn't she have a single flaw it's so lazy. And the way they are just so goddamn horny it's so icky! I don't understand how this is classified as young adult and the Percy Jackson Series is middle grade, because that series handles romance with such care and maturity. Even as a 23 year old dude I was going "yeah this is so cute!" In this book I was like "NO. BAD." Yet this is young adult??? I don't get it. Also one of the two authors seems like an absolute dickhead, James Frey, look at the controversies tab in his Wikipedia. Abusing young writers with bad contracts and taking their ideas to mass-produce garbage like this? Insane.
Speaking of the mass production, the writing is so bad and just has not been edited at all. So many moments I was blown away by how blabby the writing is. So many words that could have been removed! It's not that hard to edit. Since they clearly didn't edit this book I'm not gonna bother editing this review sorry. The writing sucks and made me feel icky and it was just so stupid.
Anyway. I had a blast and am going to reread the rest.
