I'm not quite sure how I feel about this serial novel concept yet. I'm concerned it will become overly repetitive, but I'm hoping it'll be like reading a nice, long book that immerses me in a whole other world.

I absolutely enjoyed this because of Scalzi's patented fine blend of intrigue, explosions, science, and humor both subtle and completely juvenile, as when early on in the story several diplomats find themselves essentially vomited upon. It's fun stuff, and at 93 Kindle pages for this "double episode" it only took maybe an hour out of my day, so really you have no excuse for not reading this, either now or when the book comes out in May.

Short review: I have finished the audiobook of the first three portions of this serial. I really liked the first. The second was much shorter and not as good. The third was a bit longer and better. I hope they tend to the longer and better.

My review on my blog is at http://bookwi.se/the-human-division-by-john-scalzi/

Not bad. It reads like the setup for the full book rather than a standalone episode, though that's exactly what it is. Only a couple of characters stand out here, but I can seethe potential for others to be more interesting/useful. I guess it's kind of like reading the pilot episode of a TV show. I'll probably keep going. I might read Old Man's War first, though, so the book's universe's more fleshed out in my mind.

Continued tales in the universe set up by The Old Man's War series, this book has a couple reoccurring characters and references to that series, but is more of a side story than a true sequel. Also, it's painful short [edit: because it's the first of a serialization of the actual novel "The Human Division"]. It could be the first half of a good sequel, setting up the new cast; instead it reads like the preview chapter you'd find in the back of the last one setting you up for the next.

I read all of the Human Division stories in the single novel format one after the other. So I'm only going to review them this once.

John Scalzi writes enjoyable, really funny space opera. I really enjoyed these, even though 'action' science fiction is not really my thing.

I wish that he'd written these serials as an actual novel though - there's certainly enough of a narrative thread to tie it all together - and I think it would have made for a better, richer read.

I really enjoyed the short stories in this universe ("The End of All Things"). And I was excited to jump back in. But this novella doesn't have the intrigue and fun of others, the dialogue isn't as snappy as usual and it's not really funny.

But I plan to keep reading the series, and perhaps I'll find it's just the serialized format throwing me off.

A nice little story I hope the rest of the series is connected.
