Thank you Harperaudio, Libro and the ALC Program for this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion!
I Came All This Way to Meet You is Jami Attenberg's memoir about finding her creative voice and how a life on the road led her to finding home.
What I Appreciated About This Book: If you've read any of Attenberg's previous works, you know she has a strong and unique voice in fiction. Attenberg's voice in this memoir was my favorite part- she is funny, sharp and candid. I loved listening to her stories about finding a career in writing, about other writer friends, and her relationship with Judaism and her upbringing.
What Did Not Work For Me: I really enjoyed this book, but I did find some parts to ramble a bit. I also found myself a bit confused at times with the timeline as it jumps around a bit. It makes sense in the end, but can be confusing in the moment, which took me out of the story.

God this is good.
It's not just what she says or writes about, but HOW - I've highlighted the crap out of it and since I'm reading it on a Kindle I can see that I'm not the only one. Some of it I highlighted because it was worded so beautifully. Some of it I highlighted because it's just blunt truth. Some of it I highlighted because it's so completely inspiring.
I've read almost everything this woman has ever published from articles to books, and this was a welcome change from the ongoing "dysfunctional families" theme (something she does *so* well but also something I can take or leave at this point). This though, I haven't been able to put it down. It's a lot like Alexander Chee's How to Write an Autobiographical Novel was for me - similar vein, vignettes/essays about a writer's life - the trainwrecks, the accomplishments, the process...
Well done, again, Attenberg.

This book is a roller coaster. I felt kind of lukewarm about it but she gradually reveals things about herself and her trauma that lead to a particular passage of thought-provoking writing. While it may not be incredibly memorable, the slow creep to the realization of the traumas she is working through helps to show the true talent of her writing.
this is a book by a writer for writers. it’s about pounding the pavement and hustling and begging and dreaming. it’s about feeling seen but also scared. it’s about home, and what that means, and how we find it. i’m a huge fan of jami attenberg, and I relished the chance to get a glimpse inside her world. she is brave and bold and wonderful.
