DNF beginning of ch 3, 46 mins (6%) into the audiobook. It's not the book, it's me. My brain won't let me focus on the story rn and the audiobook narrator's accent isn't helping.

The narrator of the book is the character’s older self, so though she is 19 at the time, the tone is mature and the reader gets “looking back” insights which add to the storytelling.
Things I liked about this book:
Dealt well with complex realities of racism and mixed heritage
Dealt with queerness and queer love with respect and compassion
Plot twists kept me engaged, I was unable to “solve” the mystery before the end of the book
Did not pretend that an angry woman meant a powerful women, the level patriarchal power which existed at the time is not “speculated” away
Things I didn’t like:
Heroine’s anger / rage seemed to fizzle out when it began
Some of the internal monologues got really long
