I loved this book from start to finish. The main theme is a murder mystery which is set on an Earth that discovered time travel in the 1960s. I think the whole story has been wonderfully imagined, the author chose very specific limitations of her time travel technology which constrained the inevitable absurdities to a delightfully palatable serving.

The characters are fantastic. There are at least three main, main characters that we follow with the narrative and quite a few other important main players too. Almost all of which were female and to my surprise this was achieved in an entirely natural way. There were only two men if I remember correctly and they played very minor roles, but this is just how it is and it is not made into an issue of the story at all. Although equality means equal representation, I think kudos are in order for this inoffensive delivery.

I read a few other reviews before starting, some of those describe this story as not really scifi, with a poorly constructed temporal framework and an overly obvious mystery. I disagree on all points. This outstanding science fiction novel chose to look at time travel from a fresh perspective, it set up an intentionally limited scope to explore within and the mystery truly wasn't given away until the murder happens on the page.

It was nice to think about how time travel would affect our minds and to do so without flipping straight to a psychological horror story. Some aspects of the technology are completely glossed over but others were given in reasonable detail.

I'll grant that the "how" of the murder jumps out at you the first time you hear of a particular piece of temporal tech and that it is fairly early in the story when this happens, but more importantly, I'd wager that you won't guess "who" or "why" until the moment the victim also realises.

I set out expecting this to be pretty average but was immensely pleased with it at the end. More like this please.
