"The laboratory, in Cumbria, was home to four young scientists. Margaret was a baroness turned cosmologist. Lucille had come from the Toxteth slums to make radio waves travel faster than light. Grace- who never gave the same account of her history twice- was an expert in the behaviour of matter. And the last was Barbara: the baby of the group, hair so fair it was nearly white, ruddy-cheeked and naively wholesome. She specialised in nuclear fission. All four women were combining their knowledge in a new, and unique, project."
I mean, wow. Listen, I took so many notes in each chapter so I could do a really indepth review but, quite honestly, this blew me away. I'll probably ramble with spoilers as well. Anway...
It felt so realistic! Time travel felt like such a normal and reachable endeavour, Kate's writing is just so clever! And it's not even complicated, it runs smoothly and effortlessly and we can follow without confusion. I just love how she explores everything from timelines, different selves, mental health, the affect of how death and how time is seen/felt different as a time traveller, the positives and negatives, all the social, economical and environmental, how time travel is used to help but also to be quite dangerous. It really feels like the possibilities are explored for everything that can go right and wrong if humanity ever gets their hands on time travel.
The characters are fantastic, even Margaret, what a great villainess! Again, she was as real as the others, power got to her head and her head got way too big she turned incredibly nasty. I loved Ruby, Grace and Odette, they were so relatable and loveable. I especially loved the last chapter with Ruby, "Two women, who'd already witnessed each other's deaths, married on the first day of spring. Ruby and Grace. Grace and Ruby." I mean, AWWWW! Loved Bee as well, bless her. Odette was so cool though, a girl on a mission and successful! Badass! She didn't step down when everyone told her too, so much respect.
Loved the adventure and detective elements, piecing together what happened in the toy museum while developing this new system. I really liked how the conclave felt like such a big monster business with a law unto itself with finance, crime, medics, scientists and salesmen.
I didn't really like the narrative with Fay and Teddy, it made sense later (and it's so twisted) but it just felt so out of place- but maybe that was the point? I also had a little set back at the end, I thought there was more when it ended, but then that's because I saw the page count had another 80 odd pages to read! But it was a glossary and an appendix of questions that were given to time travellers to assess them which was interesting! The story was wrapped up nicely though! I just didn't want it to be over. I love how Kate left Odette's narrative open as well, one story stops and another ready to begin.

This was the book I have been searching for without knowing it. The perfect mix of sci-fi, mystery and romance. I loved it.
I gave it five stars because it made me incredibly happy to read. There were some parts I felt dragged, and some questions I wanted answered but in the scheme of things, that is just me picking.
I wish I could write reviews better because I feel I owe it to the author. I would read this again and again. I will be following Mascarenhas' work from here on out.
One thing I will note is that I appreciated the diversity of the characters. They were put in this story and their personal arc was as it should be - their realities.
I hope to see more stories like this, people deserve to be seen.

Practically perfect in every way, which is something I never thought I'd say about a book dealing with time travel. Deftly plotted and compellingly written and also easy to follow (again, surprising given the complexity of a plot centered around time travel). The author embraces the paradoxes in a delightful and at times heartwrenching way. I'd recommend to readers who love scifi and those who don't like the genre-- pretty sure everyone will enjoy this read.

So this novel is about four British women in the 1960s who invent TIME TRAVEL, which quickly becomes a big ol' business—but it triggers a manic episode in one of the inventors, and she's exiled from the team. Now it’s fifty years later and she is determined to be part of the group again—and meanwhile, her granddaughter is getting caught up in a time travel mystery. Mascarenhas does a great job fitting all the pieces of this story together—I really was not sure at first how this would work, but it totally did, and I liked it a lot. I liked her depiction of time travel culture a lot too—just a really fun and intriguing story. A-.
