TW for domestic violence. Yes, this is a horror tale and it is violent but (without spoilering) there is a particular section that I believe could be triggering for someone who finds dv tropes particularly upsetting.

A classic case of a seminal piece of work that is very dated, mainly because of all the later, more sophisticated and modern pieces it inspired.

More interestingly, this is a tale about vampires but the ideas here have mainly been used in zombie horrors, which provides an odd dissonance for a modern reader (but not a negative one).

The post-apocalypse feels far from the ones we see now where we are far more used to feeling someone eke out their existence; here our main character seems to have no real issues, comparatively.

And so to some spoilers for the later part of the story: the character of Ruth and what happens between them seems so far from any modern depiction of women (outside the unreconstructed male authors) that it was a huge duff note for me and is the main reason for 3 stars.

I buddy read this with Nana! It was a re-read for me, my first read being in junior year of high school, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it once more!

How quickly one accepts the incredible if only one sees it enough.

Honestly the best thing about this book is Robert Neville. He's sad and alone and a little bit crazy, and I loved him. The poor guy deserves a nice long hug and a good ol' dog. He's such a fantastically complex character, and I really savored his sarcastic conversations with himself:

Crossing your fingers, Neville? Knocking on wood?

He ignored that, beginning to suspect his mind of harboring an alien. Once he might have termed it conscience. Now it was only an annoyance. Morality, after all, had fallen with society. He was his own ethic.

Makes a good excuse, doesn’t it, Neville? Oh, shut up.

*sighs contentedly* That's the good stuff, right there.

The very ending sort of bothered me on the second go, despite enjoying it the first time, and I didn't like Ruth as much as I had either. It was still pretty fantastic though.

Now, could Hollywood get it right for once? They've tried like 4 times and they still can't do it for some reason. Maybe Netflix should have a go this time.

I'm just going to start with saying The Will Smith movie doesn't properly capture the character "Robert Neville"
That being said this book is definitely AMAZING!! You can practically feel Robert's despair, the lack of hope.. You're rooting for him and at the same time so afraid for him..When he ends with the quote "I Am Legend" even though the end is staring him in the face, I can't help but be happy for him.
