4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars! This story centers on Chloe, a dog walker and caregiver for her mother—who also happens to have a bit of a nosy streak. With little going on in her own social life, Chloe enjoys observing her neighbors.
When Jemma and Adam move into the neighborhood, Chloe becomes intrigued by their lives, watching them closely. But then she witnesses something that could have serious consequences for all of them.
The story is told from multiple points of view and unfolds across dual timelines. The unexpected ending took me by surprise, and overall, I’d highly recommend this psychological thriller.

Chloe Cooper is 40 years old. Raised by single mom, she has no friends or family. She’s socially awkward and is constantly guided by her mother’s voice. She’s had no life experiences outside of taking care of her terminally ill mother and her jobs. She likes to people watch and snoop on her neighbors. She walks their dogs so she usually gets full access to their homes. She’s a bartender, and talented painter. One night she’s out walking her mom’s dog and witnesses a swimmer being killed by someone on a jet ski. She knows who the killer and victim is because she has been obsessed with the couple next door ever since they moved in.
Jemma is a 60 year old influencer and her husband Adam is a renowned surgeon. They’ve been married 34 years. Jemma believes they’ve moved to this new town for a fresh start and to help revive their marriage. Adam has had this massive house built full of windows, but there are no blinds. Jemma feels like she’s being watched and she is, because Chloe has a full view of everything going on.
The book is written with different time lines: before the hit-and-run, after-the-hit, and the hit-and-run. Sprinkled throughout we get snippets of a true-crime tv show called It’s Criminal: The Chloe Cooper Story.
In true Loreth form, the characters are well developed and not all that they seem, the pace is quick, and you are going to be misdirected when you think you have figured out what’s going on. She writes great psychological thrillers and this one is no exception.

Excellent book! This is everything you could want in a thriller and more. Unreliable narrators, shady characters, murder, deceit, I can go on and on. I read this in less than a day I couldn’t put it down. From the very start I was thrown into this twisted story. I’m not surprised I loved this one - Loreth Anne White is becoming one of my favorite thriller authors this is not my first 5 star read by her and I know it won’t be my last. This is definitely in my top thrillers of the year!
Imagine you are out walking your dog near the water and you see someone on a jet-ski hit a swimmer who also happens to be your neighbor not once but twice almost as if they intended to hit a target. You are now a witness of murder. Seeing people you know in a new and sinister light can be jarring. Find out who killed the swimmer and why when you read this heart pounding thriller. It’s available on Kindle Unlimited as well!

The Swimmer by Loreth Anne White
Poor Chloe Cooper, always watching, always the outsider looking in. She lives her life observing and making up stories about the people she sees, the people she stalks. When she latches on to a person she is watching, she's obsessed. Now her morning dog walks take her to the beach so she can watch her obsession swim. Jemma is everything Chloe is not and Chloe is in awe.
Jemma has just moved here, into the house that her husband, Adam, has built for them. It's a concrete monstrosity, no window coverings of any kind, which allows Chloe to have a view into their home and their lives, while watching from her apartment window. It helps that Chloe has a good set of binoculars.
As a dog walker during the day and a bartender at night, Chloe has a great way to get closer to Jemma. She's been hired to take care of Jemma's little dogs. She walks them several times a day, makes sure they have food and water, and while she's at Jemma's house, she can snoop and pry to her heart's delight.
Everyone has secrets! Chloe and her mom have a big one although the fact that her mom is sheltering Chloe from the past has helped to keep Chloe from interacting with others normally. Jemma and Adam have had two heartbreaks, one long ago, another more recently and this move to the new house is Adam's idea of making a new beginning for the couple even though Jemma is giving up so much to make this move. Adam has another secret and it's going to ruin the lives of many people once the repercussions play out. We'll get snippets of a podcast that both enlighten us and confuse us as we make our way through the minefield of the lives of Chloe, Jemma, and Adam. The story is confusing in a good way, with mind spinning twists and turns.
