It's been a while since I have been so happy to finish a book. This was pointless. The few stray bits of humor were not enough to make up for the general nothingness. I can only guess that it lost something in translation.

Took me a month to read this

To be honest, I am not sure how I feel about this book. The first quarter to a third I was very engrossed in the book, but maybe due to my unconscious expectation for there to be a “plot” or my confusing of the characters because of the (purposeful) naming choices for everyone, the book became quite a slog to get through. However, I am glad I read until the end because the ending really stunned me. I will not spoil the ending and I also do not want to hype it up, but it left me with my mouth open replaying and questioning the entirety of the book. I still can’t say if the ending made the rest of the book with it, but in the above sense it gave me an appreciation for the book that I was so ready to give up on, raising my rating from a 2.5 (mid) to a 4 (wow I understand why it is critically acclaimed and why so many people probably like it—I also now understand why it is as long as it is, but is it necessary?)

I think if I had no expectations coming into the book and was more willing to get lost in the town and the family I would’ve enjoyed the book way more, but the ending makes up for my lukewarm feelings. If I my expectations had been different I honestly might have given it a 5, but alas my mindset/expectations really made reading it feel like a chore. Would I recommend the book? I think I would only to those who are fine with just enjoying the writing, the vibes, and getting lost in the town as it evolves—don’t expect anything (like plot) and you’ll enjoy it if you have the time.

naturally a classic for a reason. really enjoyed this, there's a lot to love about it, a lot to think about, a lot to talk about. it's a book i would've loved to study and one i hope to read in spanish at some point. adored the ending, all very spectacular and reads surprisingly effortless for something with so many narrative layers and such breadth. one hundred years fr fr

A kaleidoscopically alive book. I read a detailed version of so many deaths and lives, and it also feels like I was in a loop, a great mirage of a book.
