Perhaps after I have had time to sit with this book a while my rating will change. This was an interesting read full of magical realism and told primarily from 3rd person POV. The novel explores themes of solitude, power, colonialism, time (history being repetitive vs. cyclic), and much more. I did find that knowing and looking up a bit of the history of Columbia helped. Please consider what it would mean to be in solitude and secluded with a finite number of people. There are things that require you to check the trigger warnings for this book. On a different note, and I don’t think this was intentional of the author, I walked away with a lesson to never place your faith in men 😂.

This book is a masterpiece. I am not from Latin America so I will never fully understand it but as a study of a country’s history through one family, it is incredible.
I didn’t get it at the start and was frustrated by the names of the characters all being the same, but once I let go of trying to individualise the characters, I got into the flow and the rhythm of the story and found it really gripping. The actual main characters are Macondo and the house, and everyone else just follows through them in a repeating cycle.
I don’t know if I will ever understand this book but it was fantastic.

This is probably one of the strangest stories I’ve ever read and I at turns loved it and hated it all at the same time.
