3.5 rounding up. This storyline was more of a building up for Isla. Not much happens at all, other than her learning her powers. The relationship between her and Oro was a snooze fest, and I don't even understand how there was a connection, other than because of mere proximity. Definitely interested to see how it ends in the next book.

This was a struggle to get into. Island was insufferable during the first hundred pages or so. She is one of the most whiny insecure characters I have read. The plot also had no progression at first. Once we got into the flashbacks, I started to enjoy the story. They were definitely the best part of the whole book for me. I liked the ancient creatures element and would have loved to see the author lean more into that, especially with the reason for fighting and big battle. The romance here was really uneven. It doesn't really work as a love triangle because of that, which was frustrating. If I am reading a love triangle, I want to be able to see the MC with both. In this case, one got a lot of development, and you see those moments that built the relationship. The other we didn't get that at all. So the declarations of love fell really flat. The characters were also inconsistent. The emotions, choices, and actions changed so quickly. Oro especially didn't seem like a centuries old badass king. I do think this was written better as far as not leaving huge plot holes than the first one, but I think the story of the first book itself was more entertaining. I am intrigued enough that I will be picking up book three, I just hope it works better for me.

Liked this one better than the first. And a twist I didn’t see coming at the end!
