There were too many slow parts of people planning what to do next. Specifically, people would spend multiple whole chapters, sometimes consecutively, not doing anything more interesting than looking up cool animals for a science project. It was particularly severe compared to the third book of the Summoners series (for example), which also had boring parts. It was insufficiently rewarding for the slog.
