A decent collection. Some hits, some misses. I liked the introductions to the stories since I've always wanted to hear how some of them come to be. Watch out for Mr. Yummy, Cookie Jar and Obits.

I've been pretty much reading nonfiction exclusively during the month of November. There are, however, three things that will quickly prompt me to switch back to fiction.

1. I have to read my book club selection before Monday which is a novel.
2. Winter, the next book in The Lunar Chronicles, was released today.
3. And last, but not least, Stephen King has a new book out!!!!!

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams is a collection of short stories. I was a little disappointed after reading it because I had already read three of the stories before. Sure, it was good to re-read them but I thought I was getting a book of all new stories so I felt a little cheated.

I'm not a real huge fan of Stephen King's short fiction. I would much prefer to read a full length novel. But, having said that, the stories in this volume were pretty intriguing. They were creepy and a little unsettling but they definitely didn't give me nightmares. Maybe I'm just too used to these kinds of tales.

All in all I give it three out of five stars.

P.S. The story titled "Obits" is worth the cost of the book.

Filled with melancholy characters and their regrets, this almost felt like a different one from most of his works. But the way The Bazaar of Bad Dreams fizzled out is undeniably classic King. (Who would've thought his flaw of writing inadequate denouements to great beginnings and middle isn't isolated with novels?)

I cannot help but compare this with his early masterpiece Night Shift. That collection gave us The Ledge, Quitters Inc., Sometimes They Come Back, and Strawberry Spring—which scared me so much it was hard to get out of the room at night. Though most of the stories in The Bazaar weren't at par, Bad Little Kid was one of the best King short stories ever written. It's also my favorite in this collection, along with Ur (still screaming at the fact that this was written as an ad for Kindle) and Obits (Death Note a la King)

In the end however, reading King's stories will always be a delight. In one of his introductory notes (he did one in every story which I found personal and endearing), he did say that most of his tales have one purpose: to entertain. And in that department, he succeeded.
