Like others have said, I found this book slow in the beginning, which was fine with me because I was listening to it to fall asleep at night. But somewhere around halfway, it suddenly picked up and I became very invested. The world building in particular was captivating. The ending didn't work for me, but not because it was bad - it was just a personal preference thing. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I gave it a chance. I would gladly read this author again (although I might try to vet the story's ending first).

I enjoyed a lot about this book, to be honest I think something about the audiobook/narration made it hard for me to fall in love with but I can understand why others might.

Thoughtful, lyrical, and charming. A beautiful fantasy infused with a cultural background and mythology that many western readers may not be aware of, but written in a way that was engaging and accessible to newcomers, and with a gorgeous ending. A very welcome entry into the "reimagined Death God" subgenre.

Good for fans of The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, or Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

I like the main character. Life has forced her to be very practical-minded. I enjoy how matter-of-fact she is when faced with challenges along her journey. She and the other main character have great chemistry.

I have mixed feelings about the ending, but overall a great book if you're in the mood for something adventurous/romantic.

I really enjoyed this, took my time reading this physically between audio books.
The relationship that blossoms between Casipea and Hun Kamé is charming, heartbreaking and sweet.
Morena-Garcia’s writing style is so beautiful, she takes you on the journey and paints these pictures that are so clear.
Forced proximity and forbidden love in here. I enjoyed this a lot more than Mexican Gothic by her.

I really enjoyed some of the particular story events, but it felt like the author had some particular ideas and wasn’t sure how to bridge them together. It felt like it was one interesting story event, some circular dialogue and internal monologues, then another interesting plot point.

The descriptions and set pieces were wonderful, and overall I liked the two main characters. The antagonist felt hollow (maybe that was the point?). The story was quite predictable, as well.
