I read this for a class (we compared it with Beowulf, which it is a retelling of). It was really cute and clever in its approach.

How cute! A real hymn to childhood.
Boulet's illustrations are as expressive and fun as always.

Super fun book that really captures the spirit of Beowulf for a younger audience. Perfect if you're looking for a short, lighthearted read, or if you need something to read to kids :)

"There was Tanya, treat-taker, terror of Halloween, her costume-cache vast, sieging kin and neighbor, draining full candy-bins, fearing not the fate of her teeth. Ten thousand treats she took. That was a fine Tuesday."
Beowulf for kids? Like many readers, I was first introduced to Beowulf in high school, and I have to agree with the NYT that "...it’s a brave thing to try to woo kids to an old narrative like Beowulf."
However, I recently revisited it with [b:Headley's delightful modernized translation|41940267|Beowulf|Unknown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1573605332l/41940267._SX50_.jpg|189503] and loved it, so you can understand that I was ready to love or hate this all depending...
"Hey Wait!"
Kids, I loved it. In my opinion, Weinersmith truly and faithfully adapted Beowulf for the juvenile graphic novel. It is epic, raucous, boastful, furious, and full of alliteration and tongue-twisting double-words. So if you like Beowulf, you've got to check this out. Sadly, no color illustrations besides the glorious cover, but HEY wait— this is a really old story so we need some antiquity, ya?
Highly recommended that you read it aloud to the kids in your life—if only so they learn how to say cache properly :)
Thanks, Jesse, for the recommendation!
