This was very slow and in depth about different aspect of the life of one character, but that’s EXACTLY what tickles my pickle so good for myself. I can however see how this could be boring for some.

The prose was stellar, but the misogyny was rampant in this book, to such a high degree that I really found it difficult to enjoy the book.

Spoiler alert / massive content warning - STONER RAPES HIS WIFE. How is no one talking about this?*
The one star isn’t because I disagree with marital rape being written about if it were in a considered way, but John Williams seems to think it’s totally fine for Stoner to do this simply because Edith is horrid. He glosses over it so much that most people don’t seem to even realise what they read. Yes, Edith is a two-dimensional bitch; no, that doesn’t mean Stoner can rape away with impunity and still be seen as some kind of stoic hero. He’s a complete dick.
Also, this book is hella boring.
