I love Jeff VanderMeer's works but this took me a long time to get through. The prose is a lot more abstract than his other writings. Even after reading Borne I was still thoroughly confused pretty much the entire time. The one time I felt it really "clicked" with me was towards the end after I smoked a joint so maybe I just need to re-read the whole thing stoned.

Incredible. Cemented itself as of the best books I've ever read after only like 50 pages. It will either be the most confusing thing you ever lay eyes on or change your life, or both.

abstract and experimental to a fault

i appreciated the attempts to diversify the prose but the lyrical passages simply had nothing of substance to anchor them to any wider meaning beyond the beauty of the words and for the first 200 pages i was so hopelessly lost
