I was looking for something a little light in the murder mystery category to take a break from the seriousness of other books I'm reading. This fit the bill. A lot is very predictable and far-fetched, but it was a quick easy read as a break.

I liked this series, especially since it centers around a character that is suppose to be investigating the clues and the murder scenes as a deputy coroner, rather than around a protagonist who starts off as the prime suspect in the first book of the series and then just happens into more murders and crime scenes in future books. There's nothing wrong with those series, I read a lot of them, but its refreshing to have someone investigating like they were suppose to. The main characters were great and so was the plot. I did guess the murderer early on though but the motive I didn't guess until the end. There were some comical moments in the book that really make you laugh and even a few that make you huff and puff and even roll your eyes.
The book left me wanting to start the second book in the series, which I purchased before completing half of the first one, and even purchased the entire series up to today. I even want to know what the heck the nipple incident everyone keeps referring to.

Super fun mystery that I didn't figure out until right before Mattie did!

I love the slapstick humor in this book and the way Mattie fully inhabits her body and her sexuality. I love Izzy and Dom and the animal side-kick. But... somehow... the pacing of this just didn't completely work for me.

I discovered Annelise Ryan thru her Monster Hunter series which I really liked and thought I would give one of her earlier series a try. I have to be honest I almost DNFed this one early on. My problem with full enjoyment of cozy mysteries is when the MC (usually female) does completely stupid stuff and gets into trouble. Mattie Winston does this in spades in the early chapters of this one. Ummm, hiding your underwear at a crime scene:??? I almost quit the book. But I'm sick and needed a very light easy read (or in this case, listen to) book so I went back in. I have to say that Mattie did grow on me and I do love how Ryan wrote in the "come clean scene" of the underwear. I do like the characters especially her best friend and boss, Izzy and the hunky Detective Hurley. I am definitely invested enough to try another in the series.

This was perfect for a cross country flight. Funny, interesting, and a little romance. Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Some definite late 2000s references that don't stand the test of time. But still enjoyable.
