i read the full novel last summer & LOVED it. i didn't even realize there is a graphic novel until my partner saw it at a local comic book shop

i really love the art & color palette used especially with the front cover

but overall it didn't hit at all like the novel

A great graphic adaptation, was great to see the characters realized. Juliet is a super relatable main character and college bound teens could really find themselves in her journey. Love the representation and inclusion in this title. Would be great for my YA section!

I thought this was a well illustrated comic that touched on a lot of topics I was somewhat aware of but with little depth. The book had more depth but was still very much an intro or a tour guide through the LGBTQ scene. Parts of the book made me uncomfortable, more so than the prose version would have, but that's a feeling I need to sit with on my own, and not a fault of the book.

*graphic novel review* (fable doesn’t recognize the graphic novel) i enjoyed this story but felt like many parts were really fast and details were missing here and there. this is likely due to it being an adaptation. i think certain things could’ve been cut out to focus on more central points to the plot but i don’t feel like there was really missing info. like a very surface-level story. it does work to make me interested in reading the original full-length novel. i loved so many of the characters so i’d love to get more details about them from the novel.

Juliet is leaving her home in the Bronx for a summer internship with her icon, feminist author Harlowe Brisbane. And right before leaving home, she gathers the courage to come out to her family - and it doesn't go as she hoped. She flies off to Portland where she meets Harlowe, along with a wonderfully queer, diverse group of mentors and new friends. But when Harlowe gets pressed on her white feminist perspective and lack of support for QTPOC, Juliet learns that icons aren't always who we want them to be.

I've read the novel and loved it! I think this graphic adaptation adds to Juliet's character in some really interesting ways, but I do think a lot of nuance and character development of others got lost. Of course, that's a necessity in this kind of translation into comic form, but I missed some parts of the original novel that I really loved. There's a lot to enjoy here, but if you like the graphic novel, please consider reading the full novel as well!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

As I always say I am not an own voice here so please go check out own voices reviews. I may be a lesbian but I am not a poc so please go check out those reviews first.
I read the original novel this graphic was based on back when it first came out and I loved the novel so of course I had to check out this. I knew the story would be the same so my rating is really based on the art and how bits chosen best reflected the novel.
The art was beautiful in so many ways. I love seeing books where the main character is not the same skinny white girl we see in most books. The way Juliet was drawn especially brought a smile to my face. All of the characters looked perfect to be honest but as a plus size girl I loved seeing her owning her body. I also love some of the more artistic touches done during certain more emotionally scenes. Using not just facile expressions but also background to really convey the emotions Juliet was feeling.
I really enjoyed how this managed to be condensed but also had all of the most important scenes. Seeing them visually was such a rich experience. I felt let I was really soaking in the story this way. Honestly this was just a fantastic graphic novel both as a visual for an equally fantastic book and as just a stand alone for those who may not read a full novel.
