Too many POV characters I didn't like or really care about

wonderful story telling. I loved the way every main character was described so well; I loved the amalgamation of African Culture, the way the author wove folklore, language, technology, magic and fantasy all together to create a world that No one else has. I fell in love with Musalodi and all the other diverse, well-represented characters. I look forward to more of this authors work in the future!!!

The names being used were too confusing to keep up with. Also I couldn’t figure out the genre or time. There’s magic but also machines but also no clocks but also there are working engines but also they fight with spears?

Plus it gave me the bad feeling this was going to be a flip on gender roles where women are the bad guys and oppressors

I liked this book. I liked the African themes, the unfamiliar names, the unapologetic mixing of magic and ultra high technology. It is very readable and liberally sprinkled with humour.

The author should include an acknowledgement to Lord Of Light by Roger Zelazny to which it owes a huge debt. Salo never said he was a god, but then Salo never said he wasn't a god!

I really, really tried. I loved his book, House of Gold, but I just couldn't track what was going on.

Fantasy in a (post-apocalyptic?) world full of African myths brought alive, a wonderful kaleidoscope of monsters, creatures and mystics. Gripping.

It took me a long time to properly get into this book - I picked it up and put it down a number of times, and for the first half or so, my rating was tending towards a 3/5. But it was well worth persevering with as the world-building is incredibly detailed, and when the story properly gets going, and threads start coming together, it’s utterly compelling. I also appreciate the fantasy setting being based on African histories, rather than European medieval histories.

I’m intrigued to see where the story goes next and am following this author so I don’t forget to read the next instalment!
