A fun sci-fi novel, and I can see why it's a classic. That said, the book feels painfully average. Not bad, but not crazy good either. The character's actions were odd at times, and the story fell into the trope of over-explaining everything. Fun, but that's about it.

I read this because it's mentioned in The Faculty (an amazing 90s alien horror movie) and I was pleasantly surprised. While I probably won't think about this book all the time, it was very enjoyable!

This is a very difficult book for me to rate because I adore the story itself, the premise is scary and philosophical but the execution didn’t really do it for me. It’s quite dated (ofc, it was written in the 1950s) so I didn’t find the characters all that loveable but I cared about them enough to root for them. I found myself skimming a lot of Miles’ internal dialogue and the writing style tended to take me out of the story, however I fell in love with the premise and the questions that brings up. Something about it wormed its way into my psyche in way other books I rated higher haven’t. So if you pick this classic up, keep in mind when it was written. I would LOVE to read someone’s reimagining of this story!
