In a world where power shifts like sand, Jase finds himself thrust into the role of leader after his father's passing. As he grapples with the weight of his new responsibilities, a young queen's actions set off a chain of events that threaten to upend everything the Ballenger family holds dear.
Meanwhile, Kazi, a skilled former thief turned queen's agent, is dispatched to investigate disturbances in the settlements. Her path collides with Jase's, revealing layers of complexity and hidden agendas. As they navigate a precarious dance of deceit and desire, they must tread carefully to uncover the truth while keeping their own secrets close.

Thoughts: Was so surprised by this book. I had put It off for a while and now I cant believe I waited so long!

Devoured this book and the sequel in one weekend. It took me a few chapters to really feel committed to the characters and stories but I was completely immersed in the story once it picked up pace and I couldn't put it down. It's definitely slow moving at some points and I can see why it may not be a book for everyone but the twists, political plots, and romance were such a good balance and a great Segway into the sequel which was even better. This was a great read AND audiobook. 5/5 for me <3

Another amazing book by Mary E Pearson!
She’s quickly becoming one of my favourite authors!
Her books always have the most compelling characters and the worldbuilding is incredible!
She just had to end this book on the most heart-wrenching cliffhanger 😭💔
