This was.....one of the bizarre books I have read in a while. And long
Unexpectedly long!!

I won't lie, there were a couple of times I almost put it down and left it but curiosity got me......but the ending altho not too bad felt a little anti climatic for the work it feels you have to go thru to get there.

it has a feel of Pulp Fiction at the beginning.....the first few chapters are all someone completely different (which threw me a tad as I wasn't expecting it and was a little confusing until I got into the swing of it....altho the very first chapter was the most puzzling as it doesnt refer to it until towards the end. ...) but like Pulp Fiction they all roll into one towards the end.

This is purely a paranormal adventure book. personally I think it's written well and the characters develop well.

I think my main issue was that after 600 pages I feel a little cheated. The book chugs along without any real storyline. Oh, ,there's the BIG storyline that ties everyone together but it would have been nice to have some kind of...tales along the way as motivation !

I notice there is only one book to follow as I write this. In all honesty...it's not something I'm looking forward to picking up right now but maybe that will change after I've read a few less heavy books!!!

An engrossing story

The world of this story is very much like our own but with many changes. Vampires, lycanthropes, elves and more all exist alongside humans.. but far from peacefully. While many of the characters are very interesting and approachable I have to complain a little about the fact that there are simply too many characters to keep track of. There are too many parallel plotlines to fully lose yourself in any one of them and the differences between our world and that of the story are rarely explained to satisfaction. This reads like a follow-up story rather than a first book. There is so much background knowledge needed in order to truly enjoy the story and the reader is left to figure it out by themselves. One is left feeling like they need to keep track of all the new information in a notebook in order to follow along. I did enjoy meeting the characters and glimpsing their adventures but I found this story to be more exhausting than exciting and will not be reading the rest of the series.

I got the kindle version from Amazon a few months ago, and a bit later I was offered a chance to review the audiobook as well. I had heard another book from this author/narrator duo (different series) and I really enjoyed it - so I decided to give this one a try as well.

I felt the story started out strong. I was instantly pulled into it. Also, Mikael Naramore is impressive as a narrator.

Then, as it continued on, I felt more and more confused. I was able to eventually figure out what was going on, to an extent. But, instead of connecting them together, he'd add in another story. There's many times I would back track listening just to see if I missed anything, but I hadn't. It isn't until the end that you've got any sort of clue what's going on.

It isn't that it is a bad story, quite the opposite. The characters were fascinating. The narration was great. It was just very hard to keep up with and difficult to enjoy a story where you feel like you're a bit off for missing important things that haven't actually been stated yet.

this was not the book I expected, and that's not a bad thing. I liked the shifting viewpoints and that they were made clear and were consistent. I thought the world building was intriguing. The characters were interesting. The pacing was pretty good. I'd recommend it with few reservations.
so why three stars and not more? some editing mistakes that probably wouldn't bug most people. Overpowered characters, some plot choices that had me sighing, and incredible buildup that didn't lead to as satisfying a conclusion as I'd been expecting.
