An amazing and engaging little treatise that goes way beyond just drama and into human nature. Probably the most fascinating aspect though, is how well it applies to our current political campaign, almost 20 years after it was written. In the alternate reality where I became a philosophy professor this would have been a great addition to an intro aesthetics class.

This short little book contains a multitude of information and ideas. In the way only Mamet can, he swerves among drama, politics, religion, and all sorts of other subjects. And, also as only Mamet can, he makes it interesting, controversial and definitely worth a re-read.

So, I'm not rating this one. I found the author to be super biased and hyperbolic in some sections. There were some good ideas in here but most of it was drowning in the other side tangents and ramblings the author goes on. I don't think I retained a lot of this book even when I go back and read my annotations.

One of the finest pieces of writing I have ever laid eyes on. Gripping as a drama and clever as a good essay, and as unsatisfyingly thought-provoking as real art.

2.5 Stars

I disagreed with a lot of David Mamet’s claims about the purpose of drama. I think the man has a very negative and slightly arrogant view of drama. However, he made a lot of good points and it was a quick easy read, so I’ll give it 2.5 Stars

Simply put: Imperative reading for all writers and artists!
