I read this book many years ago on the recommendation of a friend (hi Peter!) who told all of his circle of friends how good it was. My mileage varied considerably. The story concerns a man who makes a space ship by putting engines and life support into a huge block of orbiting ice. There are some clever ideas about how this could be used - ice is a malleable material, so that Gallagher is able to reshape his spaceship to suit his need. The story itself leaves a lot to be desired, though.
