I really enjoyed the romance between Kyle and Abby in this book because though it had some drama it was not overly angst-filled. When Kyle offers to help Abby after her attack she accepts his help without making a big deal over it. Abby knows that Kyle is a good guy and that as an FBI Agent he has the knowledge to assist her. It was nice to see two people acting like mature adults and putting their personal problems aside to work together. I also enjoyed that they were both very honest about their feelings and that they realized they had made a mistake in the past. Not all couples that break up have to treat each other like crap before they can get back together.

I found the suspense plot a bit confusing, especially in the beginning. There was just a lot going on and a lot of involved characters. I understood everything by the end but there were a few times I had to stop and read something over again to make sure I was catching everything. The "villain" in this one was a little weird for me, I just couldn't quite work out what was up with him. He had a few chapters in his POV and his actions were just strange. Sometimes I understood what and why he was doing something and other times I just thought he was crazy...who knows maybe that was the point.

After proving to be difficult to work with FBI Agent Kyle Dawson gets reassigned. His new office happens to be located near his hometown. Going home is not something Kyle wants to deal with. Not only does he not get along particularly well with his father, but going home again means seeing the woman who broke his heart three years ago: Abby Morrow.

But when a case that Abby is working on bleeds over into her personal life, Kyle can't just sit idly by so he offers to help her out. It soon becomes apparent that Abby's case mysteriously looks similar to the case Kyle was working on at his previous post.

Both Abby and Kyle will have to work together to figure this case out, and they'll both have to face their past if they want a chance to move on with a future.

I kind of teetered back and forth with this story. I liked both Abby and Kyle well enough. I liked the secondary characters. I think where it got a bit iffy for me was trying to decide what took precedence with the plot: either the romance or the police procedural. As the book went along, I felt like when the romance between Kyle and Abby was in the spotlight, the case they were trying to solve took a backseat and vice versa. I don't felt like these two aspects of the story meshed well together and I think that's why some of the story threads felt weak in regards to Kyle and Abby solving the case.

I'm trying not to use too many generalities, but because the story has a mystery aspect, of sorts, it's a little difficult to discuss since I don't want to spoil anything. Suffice it to say, I felt like there were a lot of coincidences and didn't fully understand some of the secondary character motivations. I think if these things carry over into other books in the series, it could make more sense, but at this point there is no way to know what is planned next.

Overall, it was an ok read. I enjoyed the relationship between Kyle and Abby, and I liked the set up we get of other potential couples in books down the line. I would more than likely pick up the next book in the series.

This one was just "meh" for me.

I have always loved SeRine's writing style, so, despite this book not being my usual read, I figured I would give it a shot. And it was good! Adorable and sexy and exciting - everything I have come to expect from a SeRine story. She writes a solid story, believable characters, and enticing romance. What more can you ask?

Kate SeRine is a new author for me and I received an ARC copy via Netgalley. I was pretty hyped when I first starting reading this book, however towards the end of it I found the book pretty lacking. I couldn't quite understand why as I find both characters quite likeable and the world building was solid too. I'm only able to give this book 3 stars.
