Points for Christian fantasy, as that's hard to come by. Compared to other fantasy, though, it's more reflective and less exciting than I usually prefer. I would have liked to see deeper characters (they seemed one-dimensional), more realistic dialogue (the main character is too overt and the side characters are too "perfect"), and more suspense. It's very light, feels low stakes despite the action, and while not a page-turner for me, I appreciated the creative set of races that wasn't full of the classic fantasy tropes. There were a few surprises and climax moments that could have been built up more, but overall an interesting idea.

So far, I'll keep it on the shelf but not buy any more unless the kids love it more than I did.
