Trigger warnings: Sexual assault, racism, domestic violence. 

This was one of the best books I've read so far this year, for a number of reasons. I loved the setting and the beautiful descriptions of the time frame and rural Kentucky. The characters were well rounded and felt real, and the historical aspect of it that was clearly very thoroughly researched really added depth to the story. This was the first book I've read by this author, and if it was any indication, I definitely need to seek out more of her work. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

This book's grown on me and what had started as a 3 has ended up guaranteeing 4 stars. It has sent me down a rabitt hole, and I found myself reading about the blue people of Kentucky, about courting candles and the Horse Pack Librarians. Deeply touching, I feel like this story os going to stay with me for a while...

This is an interesting story and I enjoyed the historical setting; however, I felt that the characters were lacking depth and development. 3.5-4 stars

I quite liked this book. Fussy was an incredible main character and I thought the book did a fantastic job outlining how hard life was when you lived in Troublesome. 

There were some pacing issues with the book (two giant things happened in just one day that really didn’t seem likely). But that was most of the issues that I had with the book. It was beautifully written otherwise.
