Chilling. Important. Heartrending.
The Weisel Foundation and Beit Tzipora of the women’s Zionist league donate money to Israel. Not all money going into Israel funds the bombing and the terror attacks, sure, but knowing this saddened and made me suspicious anyway. “Jabotinsky wrote in 1923: “Every native population in the world resists colonists as long as it has the slightest hope of being able to rid itself of the danger of being colonised. That is what the Arabs in Palestine are doing, and what they will persist in doing as long as there remains a solitary spark of hope that they will be able to prevent the transformation of ‘Palestine’ into the ‘Land of Israel.” Weisel’s letter at the very end calls for life, liberty, and dignity for all while also hoping for a homeland where Jews could live unmolested. I hope we (humanity) can live up to both of those dreams. Free Palestine.

Poignant source material, which makes me feel awful for only giving it 3 ⭐️. But, it just lacked detail. I know it would be harrowing detail, but nonetheless, I wanted detail. Please do not judge me too harshly.
Beautiful. I am fascinated by books that tell this story. Wiesel is a brave soul, for having lived it once, then again to write this book, and I imagine everyday of his life since.

I first read this as a teen in HS and it deeply impacted me and my sense of justice and equality in this world. Elies story is absolutely heartbreaking and inspirational and I feel everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime. History repeats itself which is why we should all do our best to learn from it. I’m grateful that this was apart of my curriculum back then and hope there are young people who are able to read this testimony today.
