Ze blijft me verassen.

I hadn’t read this book since middle school, but I thought it was important to revisit it as an adult, especially after watching A Small Light on Disney+. As a teacher of teenagers, I see many of the anxieties, hopes, and dreams that Anne shares in my own students. While the look into their hiding place is interesting and important in terms of history, this book is really just a story of a normal girl whose life was cut tragically short.

My initial thoughts in writing this review was that Anne was truly inspiring, in the face of turmoil she continued on living for an unpromised future. But I think the reality is far less romantic.

People continue on living, because it is what we are made to do. This book is a demonstration of simple humanity - what it means to be part of a family, what it means to fantasize love, what it means to mature. But herein lies the tragedy. She is human. Her diary resembles so much of my own thoughts at that age, but through the hate and revenge of people who are far removed from her - this girl who has barely had the chance to become her true self, has had her future stolen.

I loved it :’) She was such an ordinary 14 year old girl but also such an extraordinary 14 year old girl.
