Bear and Smile are always together: enjoying food, going on adventures, and finding honey. But one day, Bear wakes up and Smile isn't there. Bear spends days feeling out of sorts and sad, searching for Smile. Bird sees Bear, and tries to cheer Bear up with a song. It works, and Bear is back to smiling!

Looking for Smile is about Bear and Smile who are best friends. They do about everything together including eating breakfast, swimming, and eating honey. Everything was perfect until Bear woke up one day and could not find Smile. Bear looked everywhere but could not find Smile. Bear tried looking for Smile in all of their favorite places, but no luck. While Bear was sitting down, Bird found him and sat with him to help make him feel better. As they hummed a song, Bear felt different, and eventually, Smile came back. This was a very heart whelming book that should be read to all children. Its positivity is infectious. I would include this in my library and conversation in my classroom when talking about emotions such as happiness and sadness.

A story about sadness, about depression - about friendship.

A sweet and well done picture book about losing "smile" and dealing with depression. The art carries the story (local, Minneapolis artist), the transition to blue colors for the forest and even for Bear's fur cues kids into the change in Bear. The book got 30 preschoolers leaning in during Storytime to find out where smile had gone, plenty of moments to ask questions about feelings and discuss sadness, prolonged sadness, and not feeling like smiling. Ages 3-8.

Maybe a missed opportunity to have a child character. I understand the use of Bear to displace a bit of the sadness and to warrant a forest landscape but I might have liked a child lead better...although that may have brought this story toward a repeat of the The Rabbit Listened but with a sadness focus.

Loved the illustrations and the premise, but I wish the resolution wasn’t so simple. Sometimes smiles don’t return like that.

I feel you, bear. I've been losing track of my smile lately too...
