Chad Brown is a competent writer and The Pumpkin House is well written but I'm afraid I found it to be all too predictable. The story evolved as I expected with the exception of the denouement which I liked. The backstory was okay and the dual retribution was satisfying. I felt that the story should have been fleshed out and a bit of atmosphere (which is all too lacking in modern horror tales) added. Some stories need to be told in a straight forward manner and others benefit from a more complex telling. I did like Old Notch-foot and look forward to reading other work by Chad Brown. I borrowed The Pumpkin House as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
