it is 1:19am and i have just finished my first alien smut novel, give me 8 hours of sleep to collect my thoughts.

OKAY! so! im glad she took out the non-con scene for the special edition but we have to address the dub-con. i genuinely don’t believe someone who has just been caught in a literal hunting snare after being kidnapped from her own bed, being forced to witness many scenes of sexual assault, and then murdering one of the living beings that violated them would react the way geogie did when she wakes up to some unknown huge blue alien eating her out.

i get that sexual pleasure can be intense, more so for others, but to disregard all the non consensual stuff she’s been through and seen in a short amount of time just to get it on with the first person who is nice to her? something about that just gives me the ick.

also, all the violence against women specifically made me so uncomfortable. i had an idea of it after reading the synopsis of the story but it definitely didn’t give me the full picture as actually reading the story did.

as the story goes on, yes i see that vektal does actually care about georgie and their language barrier does keep them from communicating the finer points of their conversations and arguments but the way he described the mate bond between them screams of sexism and misgony. in a way, it feels like the author was trying so hard to not exhibit those ideals and ended up circling back to them anyway.

plot was there but definitely not the main focus. the writing style was a little too ya for the adult book it is so i didnt particularly enjoy that. its not bad, but it definitely needs a lot of work.

the sex scenes were a delight once you got past the dubious consent elements and simply for that, i give this 3 stars

Let’s be real. I read it for the spice. There was no character development, the plot was typical, and the action scenes were very dull. It felt like reading wattpad smut when I was a middle schooler. I knew that going in though, so I can’t complain too much. I found the main character very annoying, as well as the other humans. Overall, it was short and spicy, which is exactly what I was looking for. Not super well written though.

WARNING: This review discusses sexual assault and uses curse words

Holy shit this was bad. When I picked this up, I was expecting a fanfic-esque romp and weird alien anatomy, but that is NOT what I got. About 11 pages in, the main character watches another girl be violently r*ped by their alien captors. This was there for nothing but shock value and really bothered me. It was a “this is what happens when we act out of line” sort of thing, but that didn’t even make sense?  If they wanted the captives to be quiet, why do something that would undoubtedly make them scream? I digress, this isn’t about the books shitty logic. This scene wasn’t romanticized, the r*pist got his head bashed in a few pages later, so I was willing to keep reading. Then I got to the introduction of the alien love interest (did I mention this is supposed to be a romance novel?). He finds the protagonist unconscious in the snow, and his first instinct is to carry her to a cave. What does he do next? Strips her naked and performs oral sex WHILE SHE IS STILL UNCONSCIOUS. She wakes up and rather than be terrified by the big, blue alien going down on her, she just decides “yeah, this is fine, it feels good anyways” and goes with it. She was held captive on an alien ship where the main threat was extra-violent r*pe and she’s suddenly okay with this non-con act for no reason? Who am I kidding, this book logic was thrown out the window in the first few pages. Anyways, this (page 39) is where I decided to stop. This was not okay in any context, but ESPECIALLY not okay knowing this book was written in 2015. Really? We’re still romanticizing non-con and dub-con in romance novels? Really? This book gets 1 angry girl out of 1.

It is honestly what you expect it to be. I would advise you to not start the book expecting top-tier content, but be prepared to be surprised. The writing is actually quite good and while some parts are defiantly a bit corny, I can say I quite enjoyed the book.

Please be aware that there are very dark, adult themes. While the premise of the book is the usual Alien/Human trope -- Readers should be aware that there are themes of Sexual assault, Torture, Emotional & Physical Abuse among other things. Please look at Content Warnings before reading.
