Detective Paige Whiskey is the only one in the family without any magic... or so she thinks. When called to assist in solving a series of occult murders she finds out she isn't as powerless as she thinks.
Together with the demon hunter Dexx and some (questionable) allies she will try to unravel the mysteries of the murders (hopefully) before she can be used to open the Gate of Hell.

my take on the book:
I liked it a lot! :D
The character development was very good, we had some insight in the thoughts and reasoning of both Paige and Dexx. You got a good feel for them and as such it was easy to picture yourself being there, solving the mystery and fighting baddies.
I feel that not everything has been said about her memory wipe and the blocking of her magic, but that might (hopefully) come in the next book.
The flow of the story was good. Some parts of the book (near the end) took a bit too long in my opinion, but did not 'pause' the book as it were, so I didn't rly mind. Some grammar errors here and there but again it didn't bother me.

As I really enjoyed this book, I'm putting the next few books on my TBR pile. Eager to find out what will happen with Paige and Dexx (and will they have some steamy sex?), what will they do now? Will Paige be able to overcome her issues? So many questions :D

Interesting, but hurt by the inclusion of an unnecessary romantic element.

2.5 - the writing style is disjointed and needs a good edit. Some interesting ideas, but the characters are flat. Is this a YA book, maybe.

Whiskey Witches: Origins is the first book in the Whiskey Witches series. This is the first book that I have read by S.M. Blooding and I had a hard time putting this book most of the time. The author introduces the reader to a detective by the name of Paige Whiskey. She's a member of a witch family, but she's the only one without powers. Of course, my curiosity is piqued as to why and the author does not disappoint in telling Paige's harrowing story. Paige has been through a lot in her life, and because of that...it has created a means for a powerful "demon" to take possession of her during a crime scene investigation. Danger is looming and if Paige and her "partner" Dexx don't figure things out...and fast...all Hell is going to break loose.
Whiskey Witches is a paranormal mystery novel with a dash of horror elements to it. I enjoyed this story. I found Paige to be an engaging character. She's strong, but she carries deep wounds and because of those wounds she carries deep resentment to those who are guilty of inflicting that pain. I'm saddened by how misunderstood she was as a child and growing up. She's lost so much, but because of the lies she never fully understood the amount of loss she was experiencing or why.
The author builds a unique and twisted world of where not everything is what it seems. There are a few editorial errors in this book throughout, but none of them are so bad that they detract from the overall storyline.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I am eager to start the next book in this series. Paige Whiskey is a dynamite character and Dexx creates a nice balance to her. Definitely a book for those who enjoy paranormal mystery with a hefty dose of action and a dash of horror.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It started off strong , I was really liking it at first but also felt like I was missing quite a bit of backstory on the characters. I think this story had a lot of potential , however it wasn’t executed the best.
I also couldn’t get myself to like Paige whatsoever for some reason , the book was trying to convey how important she was to the plot but the writing was a little cringy when it tried to say it.
Towards the end of the book I became disinterested and just wanted to finish the book , there were also quite a few grammatical errors and words in the wrong order that didn’t make sense.

I hoped I would like this but unfortunately I didn’t.

So i loved that the book started out with a soundtrack list. Its fun to see how the author got inspiration for writing their stories.
Anyway Paige is a detective. She gets called down to Louisiana to help on a case. It looks like someone has a plan for summoning something horrible and Paige has to figure it out.
Not only that, she is struck with something she does not understand. Her family has always been powerful witches. Se though has never had power, until now. The thing is that she has always had this power but was made forget. She doe not have time to be mad or hurt. People are dying because of her.
I really loved this story. As soon as I started reading I found myself absorbed in the story all day. Paige is such an awesome leading lady. Even though she is dealing with her power and memories coming back, she doesn't let it change anything. She knows she has a job to do and can not let her feelings overtake her. Dexx is pretty awesome! I found myself loving him as much as paige. I understood why her family did what they did, but it was sad. They all are these special peoples, but treat paige as something scary.
I love how the story was spread out over a few episodes. It was written so well that you never felt that there was to much filler. Everything that was in the story, was pertinent to the story. It was definitely a different take on demons. I liked how they were explained.
This story has a supernatural feel which I think is so fun. While reading it I felt like I was watching a few episodes. It made me laugh. I felt my heart strings being pulled. I felt the angry Paige felt when everything came back to her. The betrayal by the people she loves. I loved the emotional journey that I went on and hope you give these characters a chance. They are amazing.
You will find your self searching out for the next episode because they are just that good!.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the characters complex relationships with each other and the supernatural world. Throw in a few Buffy references, a strong woman, and some memory issues and you get quite a ride.
