Liked:
  • That ending was amazing of course there was a few plot holes but overall I really loved that ending excellently with that final twist in the epilogue 🥰 it was a 5 out of 5 star ending
  • I like how the book switches back and forth between the present and the incident 11 years ago.
  • I like how even though Josh is 10 years old he is not as naĂŻve as this mom.
  • The book does a good job at making you sympathetic towards the killers in the beginning.

Disliked
  • The book was in 1st person P.O.V (This is a personal thing, honestly I think I’m just not used to reading books in first person 🤷‍♀️)
  • Brooke was just annoying at time
Quote: “these men don’t look like criminals”  she saids as she’s working at a prison 🤦🏻‍♀️
  • Josh at times doesn’t Talk like a 10 year old which I can let it go because I know how hard it is to write dialogue for kids at times.

Overall:

I think is I would have physically read this book instead of listen to the audiobook I would have enjoyed it more.
This is a good introduction to the mystery genre if your not used to reading mystery books. Honestly the ending is that best part of the book. I love how the epilogue is in a different P.O.V and answers one of my biggest question about a certain person’s death.

This is the 1st I have read (actually I listened to the audiobook) of Freida McFadden. It will not be the last! Boy was this a ride! I trusted NO ONE. I would be certain that 1 person was the killer, then I wouldn't be sure, and then I ended up being completely thrown for a loop when we found out what happened. Totally didn't see it coming. And the epilogue even has a big twist I didn't expect. I was getting irritated at our main character Brooke because she kept doing stupid stuff lol!! Me literally yelling, "why would you do that!"
This was so good! And the audiobook was done really well too.

I don’t think I have complimentary words for this one lol besides it being easy to read but that’s your standard McFadden. Main character was an (for lack of a better word) idiot and I felt like I was reading the diary of a 15 year old girl. The “reveal” I guess makes sense but it was a damn mess lol. My 4th Freida and I think sadly this will be my last

Hated the main character. Her awareness does not exist and it made the read incredibly frustrating. Fast-paced, super easy read, decent thriller twist basically at the very end. Epilogue saved.

This is my book club’s choice for November. I had heard of Freida McFadden and have been wanting to read her books for the longest time and I think this is a sign to read more of her work.

This book is based on Brooke Sullivan, and she is the new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security prison and there are three rules she must always follow: 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules. Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates. And they certainly don’t know that Shane was Brooke’s high school sweetheart – the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke’s testimony was what put him there. But Shane knows. And he will never forget.

This was an easy read with the fact that I had a guess on who it was from the beginning, I'm going to put that down to the fact that I've read a lot of thrillers and mystery books from Christ Carter to Alice Feeney, so when I got a feel of the chapters I knew who it was. The only thing that had me shocked from the epilogue from Josh, I was ready to rate this book three stars and then the epilogue happened. I would have loved this book to have multiple POV from Shane, Tim and Josh because they were key characters throughout the book. Once the answers started falling into place, the book moved quite quickly along, and it didn’t take me that long to read.

Brooke was way too trusting, for a small town where everyone knew what happened and she was still getting crap for it, why on earth would you come back and then just let the guys from that night into your house and around your child? Again, she came back from New York, did she not think to ask around about the Nanny to see if she was not a creep? I just had so many questions? Did Shane break the inmate fingers? Who was beating him? Is this how he was being manipulative? Why was Tim worried about the police going down to his basement if he didn’t kill Kelli? We knew it was going to be one of the people from the night in the house, but I would have loved for it to be like someone’s ex-partner or family member or something that would have shocked me.

This was an easy read with the fact that I had a guess on who it was from the beginning, I'm going to put that down to the fact that I've read a lot of thrillers and mystery books from Christ Carter to Alice Feeney, so when I got a feel of the chapters I knew who it was. It was an entertaining read, but I wasn’t shocked or freaked out like I usually am with psychological thriller, but I will give Freida another chance to surprise me.

Spice Rating: 🫑 / 5 🌶️

I've really enjoyed Frieda's books, but this one was the epitome of *meh* to me.

Brooke decided to move back to her childhood home and started working as a nurse in a high-security men's penitentiary. She's not supposed to be friendly with or get to know any of the inmates, but Brooke already knows one of the inmates pretty intimately. Shane is Brooke's ex-boyfriend... and the man she sent to jail 10 years ago for murdering her friends and attempting to murder her. Brooke has kept a secret from Shane all these years: they have a son together whom Shane knows nothing about. As she's reconnecting with Shane, Brooke also starts to reconnect with her childhood friend, Tim, who was also there that fateful night. Tim warns her to stay away from Shane, but Brooke can't help but wonder if she put the wrong man behind bars all those years ago.

The Inmate had one plot twist and then ANOTHER plot twist. That's what really kept me going--I wanted to see how everything turned out at the end.

I felt like some of this was a little unbelievable and that Brooke was a little too oblivious at times, but overall it wasn't a bad read. Definitely not Frieda's best but nothing to turn your nose up at, either.
