The setting is well crafted, but I didn’t feel a connection to the characters. The back of the book signals a single heroine, but there are two main characters. The one mentioned (Alys) felt secondary and less well developed to me. I also felt the plot wasn’t fleshed out enough.

I really enjoyed this book. And rarely do I feel that way about the first book in a self-pronounced trilogy when I can't speak for the 2nd and 3rd book. But, in this case, the setup is just so damn good. The characters are interesting. The city itself is interesting. And I am looking forward to the next book coming out here soon.
After her brother Darro is murdered, his sister and thief Alys decides to figure out whether his death was because of a con job he was in, or because of her last, unsuccessful theft.
With her friend Sammish, who has in love with her on her, Alys pokes at the situation, and discovers threats to Kithamar both magical and political. (Though, with her and Sammish's Longhill (the poor quarter) perspectives, they're not necessarily able to appreciate the political implications to the things they discover.)
Alys, in her grief, transforms herself, to the best of her ability, to someone like her brother, in the process cutting herself off her best friend Sammish. They both embark on their own activities, drifting further and further apart, even while there are machinations against the Kithamar power structure.
I struggled with this book, and even put it down and came back to it, thinking a break would help me get through the story. Though I finished it this time, the story never really grabbed me, and neither did the characters, with the exception of Sammish.
As this book left me pretty lukewarm, I'm not sure if I'll continue with the next installment.

Spoiler
I also thought that Alys' eventual turnaround from t her dark path was too easy. She comes to her mother furious with Sammish, and a few sentences later by her mother about her brother's character and Alys decides to change her behaviour??As this book left me pretty lukewarm, I'm not sure if I'll continue with the next installment.
inhaled this, starting in the boarding lounge of my flight home from STL and finishing as the plane touched down at SeaTac. the switching back and forth of character perspectives, although not a new or rare approach, made me think of the Joe Abercrombie Age of Madness series (which i enjoyed a great deal). looking forward to the next one!

It’s very well written and the characters are deep; I just couldn’t get into the story. It never really hooked me.
