Wicked Gentlemen

Interesting! Victorian-esque mystery given a supernatural twist. When a gentle woman goes missing, her brother and husband ask a Prodigal - those with demon blood who are mostly human but treated poorly by fearful humans they live amongst - to help find her. This is right up my alley with the worldbuilding with magic and detective work, but in order to solve the crime a lot has to happen very fast and some of it feels like it comes out of nowhere. But atmospheric and worth a read.

That was fantastic. Maybe I'll be able to write a coherent review of it the next time I read it.

This one of the first steampunk books I've read and it made me love the genre. I picked it up on a whim (Amazon's recommendation actually; this was back when I used to have an account), and I liked this book from the start. The story was simply enjoyable with a hint of darkness. What impressed me the most was author's ability to build such a world and spin such a story in so few pages. Immediately after finishing, I went looking for more steampunk, but was sad to find a tiny selection with mostly mediocre works of short stories and novellas by unfamiliar authors. Things have certainly changed since then. The genre is huge now, but the quality is still pretty much the same as before--mostly mediocre/generic, with the exception of a few good books/series.

Spare prose and deftly drawn characters that pack a punch. To be reread soon...
