Gifted by my elf in the goodreads 2020 holiday exchange! Thanks so much! this one has been on my list for so long!
3.8 rounded up.
Read for the 2021 PopSugar book challenge prompt #26. A book with an oxymoron in the title.
I had a hard time filling this prompt but I feel this title works well enough.
Ginn Hale as always writes solid worlds and captivating stories. Another big thanks to my holiday elf from 2020 for gifting this.

Belimai & Harper.
Deep. Captivating. I was fully engaged in the story, the fantasy world, the characters. Loved it! ☀️

My first Ginn Hale because Lord of White Hell has a wait-list.
More typos than typical, but good writing. I liked the MCs. It's two novellas and I do think we lost a lot not getting to see the character/relationship development that clearly happened in the time jump between the two sections. And Harper's fetish confession without any reflection or letting Belamai know is icky. But overall I enjoyed it.

Felt a bit underdeveloped, would definitely enjoy a more in-depth look into this world.

I have only heard good things about Ginn Hale’s writing, and I’m glad to have finally picked one up! The characters felt so human and immediately charming. The world building was straightforward without being heavy handed or overly expository. The twists and turns of the mystery felt appropriately earned and well foreshadowed. And I really liked Belimai and Harper’s romance :’)
Fabulous worldbuilding, but I think I just wanted the book to be more. Despite not being quite as satisfying as I hoped, though, I read past my bedtime to find out how it turned out all the same.
Memorable read as both as a dark fantasy book and as an MM book. The relationship between two leads develops organically and they have their own emotionally repressed dynamic which seems natural in the Victorian-era inspired setting. I like that they're absolute weirdos with many unattractive traits, it makes their chemistry even more special.
Lovely book with such an intriguing world and complex characters. I only wish there were more stories set in this world. It's a bleak world they're in yet the characters have an understated dignity no matter how much suffering they've had to endure. I'll definitely recommend this book and will read Ginn Hale's other works.
