need to stew on this bc why did bro just turn into a butterfly

Not my favorite Sjon, but an interesting little novel about a tiny country in flux. Independence, epidemic, and an erupting volcano all swirl in the background of the story of a sixteen year old gay man as he spends his days at the cinema or sneaking off to get paid for sex by the older men of Reykjavik.

Both incredibly grounded and surprisingly surreal, Sjon makes the history of Reykjavik a playground to express a time of great change in every conceivable way, from artistic to sexual to political to medical.

Solid, short, and oddly beautiful by the end. Especially those last five pages, which makes you see the novel you read under completely new eyes. It's a daring and very cool little thing to try, and amazing to pull off.
