I wouldn't say I'm generally a "Western" fan, but if you involve women, especially queer women, I'm going to pay attention. Though the protagonist is a straight white woman, she at least has the good sense to pay attention to those around her who are different, and her naiveté becomes more a thing of the past. Set in a somewhat alternate western U.S., much parallels our present day struggles.

Enjoyable enough and a quick read, but something about it felt flat. I enjoyed reading about queer characters in this time period but it often felt like they had teleported from the 21st century. For me, the author didn’t try hard enough to contextualise/integrate the characters into the setting. The main character in particular felt very hollow and lacking in any real personality.

I loved this book! Way more religious undertones than I expected but makes sense for the time period. The book did a great job of having an interesting premise and setting while also making the reader invested in the characters. Kept wanting to pick this up so I could know what happened next. Would definitely read a sequel.

Such a fun book. Action packed, but also sad. Commentary on the treatment of women, black people, and LGBTQ people in history — with a particular focus on the hardships of being an infertile woman.

I love that it takes the narrative of oppression and twists it into one of empowerment. I love the angle of “chosen family” being set in the desert, segregated from society both by choice and by necessity. I love the idea of “outlaws” and “outcasts” being one in the same. Because outcasts are viewed as outlaws — as scapegoats to make them criminals.

The characters are easy to love. The book is the perfect length.

I love the subtle inclusion of queer characters. From trans to gay to bisexual. And yet this is mentioned without it being a big deal. There are no big moments of “coming out.” It’s just matter-of-fact.

I give books 5 stars based on how memorable it is for me. So time will tell if I come back and change my rating to a 5.
