The biggest problem with this book is that it could have been so much better than it was. It could have been so inclusive and intersectional and diverse, and could have been a beautiful, in depth story of marginalised people coming together in a world that hates them.

Instead, we got the barest hint of that, with a very self centred, very white narrator that was, honestly, kind of boring.

The worst thing about this book was it wasn't bad. It just could have been incredible.

Sort of an Old West Crucible; as described on the back. I've been in quite the reading slump recently and this was the perfect book to get me out of it. It was well paced and action packed. It features a diverse cast of characters centring around queer people and women. Ada is also an incredibly endearing protagonist forced to swiftly grow up. The world is wonderfully built and lets the reader escape to the world of cowboys and outlaws. Definitely worth the read!

Reading about misogyny through the window of "you're only a woman if you (can) give birth (to as many children as possible)" and everything regarding pregnancies, miscarriages, abortions in detail makes me deeply uncomfortable. Also, I think I had it with religious bigotry of this type for a while since I read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer.

I’m not sure if I’m disappointed in this book because it wasn’t what I expected or if it’s because it’s just not very good? I thought I was getting a book where the MC joins an outlaw gang and travels around with them doing heists and helping other women. But really I just got
the main character joining the outlaw gang and they all just kinda hang out until the MC leaves in the last ten pages of the book
there was some nice representation of gender fluidity and sexuality but still I would have appreciated more of a Kissin Kate Barlow feel rather than just wheel spinning to get through to the end of the book.
