This is beautiful. A fantastic blend of space epic, old empire, and Mesoamerican culture and mythos. Very refreshing and well spun.

Futuristic House of Cards told from the POV of a peon instead of the ruler. Slow-ish at the start but once it gets going it really sucks you in.

I just don't care about the story or characters at all.

There are moments in this book which I would give 4.5 to 5 stars, but I did have a hard time with the names, and amount of literary terms used. It was very alienating at the beginning. Which really allowed me to feel the same way Mahit probably does throughout the book. It felt like stepping into a universe which is very similar but oh so different.

But overall I was not able to get lost in the book as much as I hoped for

I will be reading book 2 and hoping for less literary themes
