An interesting premise and overall I’m glad I read the book.
It reminded me a lot of Virginia Woolf, so if you’re a fan then you’ll probably like this one too.
Enjoyed it but was never truly gripped by it. I’m not sure if it was the style of it, I heard there is a film adaptation and I will check that out.

Another book I read for class on our Harlem renaissance unit and I genuinely enjoyed reading this. The structure was a bit wonky but oh well

I'll start by acknowledging that of all the literary eras, the Modernist era (~1910-1939) is the one I very much despise. Woolf, Waugh, Fitzgerald, von Arnim... too much talking about thinking, too many existential crises. Nella Larsen fits perfectly into this group of irritants, so if one <i>is</i> a fan, I'd say she's a must read. For me, it's just another story of bored women experiencing self-inflicted repression and making selfish decisions, often to the neglect of their children and weak husbands.
Unsuspecting me failed to look into the period during which this was published, so fascinated was I by the practice of passing. I think I'd do much better with a nonfiction read on the subject. One star given for a mature writing voice; one star given for a surprising, if over the top and frustratingly ambiguous, ending.
