Very long! Took me a long time to finish. The lack of knowledge as to Sami history yes well as Christian revival movement of the 1850’s in Scandinavia kept me from likely enjoying this story so much. Jussi is an unwanted and abused Lapp child that finds refuge in the home of a pastor. He is still mistreated by the locals. The pastor teaches him to read and write. Jussi becomes a suspect in a couple of crimes against women by a corrupt sheriff and constable. I am a bit confused as to how Maria was attracted to him and to what eventually happens to his sister Anna M.
