This book started off pretty well. The impact emotionally immature parents have on their children is well discussed. However, there wasn’t really anything on self care. The advice is akin to any other popular self-help book. Make different choices, change your thoughts, be positive… only then can you live a full and happy life. There is a general lack intersectionality and acknowledgment of neurodivergence. The first two parts paint a picture of complex relationships with the self after being raised by this type of individual, yet the advice is the same over-simplified toxic positivity you find in 1990’s Cosmo or at a motivational seminar led by some white lady with a blonde bob and a sassy smile. Overall, disappointing.

Skip this book. Read her other one: "Adult Children Of Emotionally Immature Parents"
This book is very much a waste of time. It's not going to give you anything more than her other book. I listened to the whole book so I could be sure. I am.
35% in CESAR MILAN IS NOT AN ANIMAL PROFESSIONAL. HE IS "SELF TRAINED". DOMINANCE THEORY IS BEYOND DEBUNKED. DO. YOUR. RESEARCH. You literally said, "I thought the dog was fearful, but I was wrong! Dominance!" Nope. You were right, and instead of doing research, you just trusted the TV personality that believes you should dominate your dog or, as I like to call it, make your dog fear you! Stick to what you know. It's not dog behavioral science. *internal screams*

This book is not necessary. Her other book was fantastic. This one is a waste of my time. Lol

What an awesome read! Not only did I learn more about how I was brought up and why I do or say some of the things that I do, but I learned just how easy it is to pass along these kinds of negative beliefs to my children.
One important thing I noticed, this book not only applies to adult children but also applies to our other relationships; our partners, spouses. I wasn't even 10% into the book when I noticed just how much the book relates to our intimate relationships as well.
I think anyone who is considering starting a family should read this book. The stories and insights to living with EI parents can be used for prospective parents to avoid falling into the trap of inadvertently teaching their children that putting their own needs first is selfish.

There are some gems in this, especially if you grew up not able to feel your feelings. There's also some unhelpful and likely untrue stuff. 100% of dread represents things that are always bad for you? I guess you don't get root canals or pap smears anymore? Echoing the other reviewers about the choppiness, "alpha" idea, privilege, etc.
