The worldbuilding (Nigerian godpunk post-apocalyptic urban fantasy) was great. However, I often lost interest in what was going on - I think because the prose tended toward exposition, even in the first person POV, so I'd sort of skim along. I also felt the pacing suffered: lots of timeskips, relationships feeling shallow because events happened so quickly one after another, cursory explanations of events that could have used a whole chapter to cover. Apparently this book was originally supposed to be a trilogy, and I think it shows.
My favorite characters were some of the supporting ones; David was ok as a narrator but I didn't love him. It kind of always felt like he was just reacting to events, talking about what he didn't want to do & then having to do it. The flaws of this book were noticeable enough to lower my enjoyment, but not actually abolish it.

This book was supposed to be a trilogy but instead got smooched together into one book with three parts, and you can tell. There is a breakneck pace and barely any space for character moments. Which is something that’s very important to me as a reader. The idea and setting are completely out of the box for me and that did keep me quite engaged at the beginning, but as the story continued moving along too fast I felt like I was being forcibly dragged along.
It didn’t help that I didn’t vibe with the main character at all too, I’m not fond of “brash man angry at everything, that’s better at fighting than everyone else so he doesn’t listen”.

So while I found the setting interesting the lack of character focus made me not enjoy this book.

Read fast, but wasn't particularly pulled into the world and did not really care about any of the characters. The plot also seemed to hinge on huge climactic moments but then there were no dire consequences for any of the characters, so became pretty predictable. Not particularly memorable for me.
This book was really difficult to read for me. English is my second language and I had to read really slowly or google search for me to get some of the phrases. BUT, the story was so interesting that I'm not mad about it!
Of course, I didn't know anything about the culture and the deities in this book, and it was really fun to learn about them in this setting. This is a self discovery story all around a demi god and set in Nigeria, yes please!
Unfortunately, I think the writing style was not for me and all the problems I had with understanding really affected my overall enjoyment of this.
