I found this hard to read. A lot of dialogue and a lot of puns were fine for me as a grown up, and the mis-matched shoes and the quest to rectify the situation were a lot of fun for the kids, but trying to read this aloud and explain everything was laborious. It didn't strike me as an easy reader, although the concept was fun in general.

This one was just meh for me. The illustrations of the little girls were great, but the shoes just did not appeal to me at all. The message of being yourself and not feeling the need to conform is good, but it just fell flat for me. I did like that Elephant and Piggie made an appearance in the middle of the book; has that happened before?

It was all right.

What gives this book a 3-star rating from me (it was really more of a 2-star read) is
the AWESOME hidden Pigeon.
Seriously...that was genius, Mo!

Mo Willems has fostered a love of reading in the minds for many over the years. Now, there is a branch-off series full of the same emotion and easy to read words between the covers, with this one written by Bryan Collier. As Gerald and Piggie sit down to enjoy this one, they are pulled into the world of a girl’s various pairs of shoes. Some are fancy while others are for lazy days. Some are for sports and others are for the weather. But, whatever they may be, they come in pairs. When the little girl chooses two completely different pairs of shoes, the others panic, sure that the Dad will notice and get upset. Panic amongst the shoes (as well as Gerald and Piggie) as they go to find the little girl to stop this travesty. Everyone is in for quite the surprise indeed. Neo liked this book and wanted to read it alone beforehand, perhaps to practice. He loves his shoes and while he does not have too many, we all know that mixing them up can sometimes lead to quite the headache.
