It's fair to say that this play was practically drilled into my head owing to the fact that I had to read it both in the original french for my fourth year high school french class and for my AP English Literature class at almost the same time. In both languages the play manages to be beautifully constructed with clever characters who use their wickedly sharp tongues to get themselves into and out of trouble as much or more than their swords. I reread it fairly recently and found it to be just as beautiful and heartbreaking now as it was to me when I was 17. If you have the chance and ability to read it in both languages and get a more complete understanding of the cleverness of the language I would highly recommend you take it. But regardless of whether or not you can read it in both French and English, the important thing is that I cannot recommend enough that you read it.

Sensual, so poetically sensual! Brian Hooker's translation of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, by comparison of several of other notable renditions' first acts, is of superlative adoration to me. The quirks of their musings, the musicality to their delivery, the accentuation of their diction... Whether flamboyantly arousing the light of the Sun or probing itself in the somber, nocturnal delicacies of the Moon, Cyrano's character is painted with the fragments of humanity—chivalry, love, pride, reflection, panache—that simplistically yet intricately surfaces the precise essence of his multifaceted character. I can french my adulterated body moment after moment after moment, yet it will forever be reminded of his complementary trivialities and strings the instance it meets itself with Cyrano's begotten symbolism. Special and endlessly resonant, for the human being can never be rid of any of the qualities of Cyrano de Bergerac.

A perfect translation of a perfect play. On the surface this story appears to be about a man with a large nose, but in actuality it has nothing to do with De Bergeracs nose, it is a torturing portrait of self loathing, love, friendship, and doubt, and self image.

Though I think I like the 2021 adaptation better (it got rid of the sillier bits of the play and really cemented the tragic themes, though in doing so getting rid of a lot of literary, scientific, historical references) I really loved this play dearly.
