This is a play with everything. Cyrano is a brave, intelligent trooper cursed with an extraordinarily large proboscis that, he believes, makes him unlovable . He falls madly in love with Roxanne who, in turn, loves the handsome but dull-witted Christian. Yet, ultimately, it is Cyrano's words that win over Roxanne -if only she knew the architect of such splendid love poems and letters. This is a play that is humorous and tragic and totally enthralling.

Easily one of my favorite plays. Sometimes plays don’t always have the same impact on paper as they do on stage; this is not one of those times. I can easily visualize the characters, the banter, the scene...truly one of the best.

So witty and fun. I was surprised at how much I highly enjoyed this play from the 1890s. Rostand's Cyrano is brilliant and original.

Super fun! Read it in French and despite all the poetic terms I was able to follow along. I particularly enjoyed the conscious ridiculousness of characters such as Cerano's good friend who is a baker/poet, and recites poems to brioches and croissants and such. Bought it on in a whim in Strasbourg and did not regret it.

There was nothing about this play that I liked. I guess I in general don't like the tale of Cyrano, but I also didn't like the writing of it here. The dialogue was choppy and unnatural, and I never cared about any of the characters. The one scene in which Cyrano lists off possible insults for his nose was a bit enjoyable, but the rest of it felt like a slog and I just wanted it to end.
It just wasn't for me.
