My classical education tells me that this book is an absolute classic of unrequited love. Having watched adaptations across the years, it was only now that I sat down and seriously read the book. And boy, was I not disappointed.

Enfin!!
After picking this up from 'Friends of the Library' spot, I have finished the play Cyrano de Bergerac. Forgive this review for being in a small way, dramatic. After such a dramatic tale, needs must, no?
This is not a summary, forgive me. These are just my feelings on this foolish tale.
Cyrano's Foolishness
1. His uncontrollable 'need' to make enemies out of many.
2. His pride.
3. His lack of humility.
4. His miserable enjoyment of miserableness.
5. #2
6. #3
7. And...just for emphasis, #5.
Cyrano's character wasn't completely miserable to read. He was a sportsman, a wit, and a catalyst to others around him. Confidant, swordsman, brave. But, the whole plot revolves around him being too scared, too proud to admit that he loved someone, and despite his physical appearance, take the chance to see if she could have felt the same way. But all on her own Roxane proved to be quite a shallow, childish character, who may have completely rejected Cyrano at even a hint of romantical interest. Interrstingly, I felt that Roxane eventually had the most character development (and may have come to accept Cyrano).
May I express an annoyance to how love is portrayed in this?! Love is viewed as purely emotional, based upon nothing but the feelings of one person, or the face of one person, and now that person will do anything (all coached in poetic expression) for the object of their 'love' of their infatuation without real knowledge of the other person. Roxanne was married for such a short time, knew the guy for such a short time, exchanged maybe 4 conversations, and remained a widow for 15 years after his death. 15 years...
Christian I actually kind of liked toward the end, because at least he recognized Roxane's ability to make a decision on who she loved, instead of just forcing her to be oblivious to the merits and faults of both men.
So while here lies some pretty speeches, the motive of them reveals nothing but a kiddie pool filled with jello.

Great fun! I'm a big fan of witty characters, so I really enjoyed this.

This was so so so good. The drama, the tension, the romance, the language, the poetry--every aspect of this play was just wonderful. And sad :(. Why did it have to be so sad???
